INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIRE FIGHTERS, AFL-CIO, CLC
The IAFF was formed in 1918 to unite fire fighters—for better wages, improved safety, and greater service for their communities. At
a time when fire fighters worked seven days a week, had little benefits, and safety meant putting a wet towel over your face before
running into flames, the IAFF became the voice of the fire fighter, the protector of the protector.
IAFF history is this legacy—of
safety achievements, political accomplishments, and every success the locals achieve. The IAFF is always on the frontline and has
been the leader in advancements that have improved the service and lives of our members. Collecting our history and sharing it is
important in continuing our legacy.
For over eight decades, the IAFF has been there for our members and continues to be a driving force in advancements within the fire
service.

It’s the IAFF that introduced the first safety standards in 1980 and today is designing state of the art gear for 21st century fire
fighters. It was the IAFF who urged President Ford to sign the Public Safety Officer Benefit Act, which provides money to families
of fire fighters who die in the line of duty. When hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma hit the Gulf coast region, it was the IAFF who
rushed to assist IAFF locals and their families.
